James Whineray and Lucy Byrnes opened their first wine shop on Thompson Road in North Fremantle in 2018, trading as Left Field Wine Store before renaming it Wise Child and, more recently, shifting the operation to Market Street in Fremantle's West End. The list runs almost entirely to Australian minimal-intervention wine — organically grown fruit, wild ferments, producers like Yume Wine and Basket Range moving fast off the shelf, pet-nats especially. Craft beer from makers such as Two Metres Tall and Rock Ridge sits alongside it, and the till also rings up milk, olive oil, newspapers and loaves from Bread in Common, the everyday stock of a shop that still thinks of itself as a corner store first. Timber floorboards, industrial shelving and landscape prints keep the fit-out plain and light-filled rather than precious, and an underground cellar hosts occasional tastings and wine events. Open Monday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm, in the thick of Fremantle's food strip.
