阿德莱德丘陵, SA

A short run up the South Eastern Freeway, past Balhannah's edges, and the road delivers you to a windmill you can't miss — the marker that means you've arrived at Harben Vale Cherries. There's no winding descent into a hidden valley here, no white-knuckle approach; the orchard sits on ground gentle enough that anyone can wander its rows, parking close and easy, which is no small thing in a region better known for its slopes and switchbacks.

December brings the season into being, and it holds through to mid-January — a short, concentrated window when the Adelaide Hills turn over their cherry crop and let visitors do the picking themselves. You're handed a bucket with a plastic liner, free to taste your way along the rows to work out which variety suits you, before filling your container in earnest and paying by the kilo for what you carry out. It's an honest, tactile sort of transaction — no shop intermediary, no punnet, just tree to bucket to boot of the car, with an empty box on hand if you're minded to make a gift of it.

The rhythm of the place is simple and unhurried, gates open from nine until four, with a nudge to be in among the trees by three so there's time to pick properly before the day winds down. Bring a hat, sturdy shoes, sunscreen and water — this is a working orchard, not a manicured garden, and the pleasure of it is in the sun on your neck and the particular quiet of an orchard mid-week. Larger groups are asked to call ahead, a small courtesy that keeps the rows unhurried for everyone. It's a modest, family-run outpost of the Hills' fruit country, open for a matter of weeks each year — worth timing a Hills drive around.
