Avoca Beach Picture Theatre

Central Coast, NSW

The Hunter family started showing films in 1948, projecting through a hole in Norman Hunter's garage wall to raise money for the Avoca Beach rock pool. The current building opened in 1951 — built from local timber and Kincumber-made concrete bricks. National Trust listed 2001. Four generations of Hunters since (the youngest take tickets during school holidays). Red velvet seats, art deco foyer, French doors opening to a terrace under a Norfolk pine. The last privately owned single-screen theatre in NSW. Ninety minutes north of Sydney.
