In the Paluma Range National Park north-west of Townsville, Big Crystal Creek tumbles over granite into a chain of clear pools, the largest a broad, deep waterhole known as Paradise. Ringed by rainforest and smooth boulders made for lazing, the water runs cool and clear off the range even in the tropical heat. A grassy campground and easy access from the highway make it a favourite weekend escape for the region - busy in summer, blissfully quiet midweek. Freshwater turtles patrol the shallows and the swimming is superb.
