Behana Gorge and Crystal Cascades sit inland from Cairns in rainforest country, cut through by narrow canyons that this outfit runs abseiling and canyoning trips through — jumping into plunge pools, sliding down rock chutes, rappelling past waterfalls, working downstream through terrain most visitors to the reef and rainforest never see up close. Trips are graded from an introductory Crystal Cascades circuit through to advanced routes like the Spillway canyon, with a river-boarding option on the Barron for something less technical. The operation, run by Bazz, took over the canyons from Cairns institution Raging Thunder and has built out the trip list since. Because these are live watercourses, trips depend on rainfall and water levels rather than a fixed calendar — guides make the call on which canyon suits conditions and group ability on the day. It's one of the few ways to properly get inside the wet tropics rather than just look at it from a lookout, and a solid half-day add-on to a Cairns rainforest visit.
