The 1936 Public Curators Building — terrazzo floors, polished local timber panelling, stained glass — took 15 years of civic lobbying to convert into a gallery, finally opening in 1995. The programming leans into what Cairns is actually positioned to do well: First Nations culture, fibre and textiles, and the art of the tropics. Free entry throughout.
