South of the Atitjere community in the East MacDonnell Ranges, this declared fossicking area spreads across old mica-mining country around Mount Palmer. It is one of the richest gem grounds in the Territory, with more than twenty gemstone species recorded, among them almandine and hessonite garnet, zircon and feldspar. Bush camping is allowed on site with no facilities, while the Gemtree caravan park on the Plenty Highway, about 140 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs, offers water, fuel and showers.
