On the Western Downs about 300 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, the country around Chinchilla is scattered with petrified wood, Jurassic cycads, conifers and ferns turned to stone and prized by lapidary collectors for its colour. Two landowners allow fossicking at general-permission sites, and specimens can be gathered from the ground surface along road reserves, though digging there is not permitted. A Queensland fossicking licence is required, and written landholder permission is needed to collect anywhere else.
