CAPRICORN COAST, QLD

The Criterion Hotel in Rockhampton, constructed in 1889, is a landmark Australian pub on the banks of the Fitzroy River. Originally built as the Bush Inn, it was rebuilt as The Criterion by Dorinda Anne Curtis seeking 'a public house of splendour and class.' Long a fixture hosting notable guests including Queen Elizabeth II and General Douglas MacArthur, it remains family-operated by the Turnbull family since 1991. The venue specialises in steak, beer, and entertainment, with a bar, function room, and 18 motel suites added in 2004.
