Danggu GeikieGorge

WA

Where the Fitzroy River slices through an ancient limestone reef near Fitzroy Crossing, Danggu (Geikie Gorge) rises in walls of white and grey stone, water-stained and carved by the wet-season floods that surge through each year. Boat tours - many led by Bunuba traditional owners - glide beneath the cliffs past freshwater crocodiles, sawfish and rock wallabies, reading the gorge as both a fossil reef and a living country. A walking track follows the bank for those who prefer to stay ashore. In the dry season the river runs clear and calm; it is one of the Kimberley's most accessible natural wonders.
