In 1867, James Nash pulled 72 ounces of gold from this ground and triggered the rush that, by local reckoning, saved Queensland from bankruptcy. The museum occupies the former No 2 South Great Eastern Mine — second richest on the Gympie Goldfields — with original stamper battery still on site and 16,000 catalogued items across 4.5 hectares. Entirely volunteer-run since 1965.
