Charles Rowe held the licence of the Eureka Hotel at the top of Thorntons Gap in 1865, a year after Townsville was settled, serving bullock teams hauling between the port and the goldfields. It is the last building left standing on that road, slab-sided, one of a handful of its kind in the country, and on the Queensland Heritage Register since 1992. Scones and a long tea list now.
