Twenty minutes north of Launceston, where the Tamar Valley flattens into rich river-flat soil, Hillwood Berries has spent some thirty years turning a working farm into one of Tasmania's most reliably good days out. This is a second-generation family operation, and it shows in the unfussy way the place runs: rows of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries laid out for anyone to wander through with a punnet, paying only for what ends up in it. The valley's cool climate and river-moderated air are made for berries, and from November through to May the patches are in various states of ripeness, meaning a visit in high summer looks quite different from one in early autumn.
The picking itself is the point — there's a particular pleasure in crouching along a row hunting for the reddest raspberry or the blackberry that gives just slightly under a thumb, a task that occupies children and adults with equal seriousness. It's an open-air, self-directed sort of outing, best suited to those happy to spend an hour or two moving slowly between rows rather than rushing the harvest. Once the containers are full, the Farmgate Café at 105 Hillwood Road is where the day rounds out, with berry-driven treats, simple meals and other local produce on offer, and free entry regardless of whether you've picked anything at all.
It's the kind of place that rewards a loose plan — check what's fruiting, bring a hat, expect purple fingers by the end of it. The Tamar Valley's wineries and river views make a natural extension for anyone driving up from Launceston, but Hillwood holds its own as a destination: unpretentious, seasonal, and entirely dependent on what the rows are doing that week.
