Mallee FowlRestaurant

RIVERLAND, SA

Five kilometres from Berri on the Sturt Highway at Monash, an Australiana-themed restaurant sits on eleven acres of mallee bushland, its dining room built to resemble an early settlement dwelling and hung with an eclectic collection of colonial and country paraphernalia. Chooks, geese, emus and other native and farmyard animals roam an enclosure around the building. Billed as the Riverland's longest-running restaurant, it runs entirely off-grid, and the kitchen holds to hearty country cooking, chargrilled steaks, kangaroo and chicken schnitzels, with pasta, German dishes and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options alongside, matched to a South Australian wine list. It is a full-blooded theme destination rather than a subtle one, and it has drawn recognition as one of the country's best themed restaurants. Bookings advised.
