On the Brookton Highway at Karragullen, about 40 minutes into the Perth Hills, Peter and his son run one of the more diverse pick-your-own blocks in the district, rotating through cherries in November, blueberries and blackberries into January, figs from February, then apples, pomegranates and persimmons carrying the orchard through autumn and into winter, with avocados available year-round. The farm opens seven days a week, early to late, and Peter's habit of walking pickers through the rows himself, pointing out which trees are ready and which aren't worth the ladder, has built a following well beyond the immediate district. There's no cellar door or café attached, just crates, secateurs and a scale for weighing what's picked. For Perth families chasing a specific fruit rather than a generic day out, the rotating harvest calendar is the reason to keep coming back through the year rather than visiting once.
