South Australia's only World Heritage site, and one of the world's great fossil windows. For hundreds of thousands of years animals fell through ceiling shafts into these limestone chambers and were sealed in sediment, leaving the Victoria Fossil Cave stacked with the bones of megafauna - marsupial lions, giant kangaroos, a rhino-sized Diprotodon. Guided tours descend through decorated caverns, while the Bat Cave observation centre livestreams a summer colony of southern bent-wing bats wheeling in the dark. Wet Cave can be walked self-guided. Set in red-gum woodland on the Limestone Coast, it is a place where the deep past is close enough to touch.
