In Lara, on Swan Street, a specialist grower of cacti, succulents, caudiciforms and bulbs has spent more than two decades quietly building one of the region's more particular plant collections. This is not a general garden centre with a token succulent table — it is a nursery built around a genuine fascination with arid and unusual forms, the kind of place where caudiciform oddities sit alongside cacti and succulents chosen for character rather than mass appeal. The nursery grew under the care of owner Lyle Filippe, whose decision to retire after more than twenty-two years of seven-day weeks marks the end of an era; the collection is now being wound down gradually, with stock offered at deep discount as a gesture of thanks to the customers and enthusiasts who have shopped here over the years. For now, the gates remain open daily, and there is still a chance to walk the grounds, browse pots built up over decades of specialisation, and talk plants with people who have spent a working life among them. It is a bittersweet moment to visit — part farewell, part last opportunity — and for collectors of succulents, cacti and caudiciforms in particular, it is worth the trip to Lara while the nursery still stands.
