Strahan was the only outlet for the mineral wealth of Tasmania's west coast wilderness, and its heritage precinct preserves the stories of the convicts sent to the notorious penal settlement of Sarah Island, the miners of Queenstown and Zeehan, and the early struggles for environmental protection.
