Wilders Bakery

CANBERRA WINE DISTRICT, NSW

Baking on Boorowa Street since 1950, when Milty and Olga Wilder opened the doors, this family bakery is now run by a third generation and remains one of Young's defining food addresses. The signature is a cherry pie built on locally grown fruit, fitting for a town that calls itself the Cherry Capital, alongside handmade breads, pastries, cakes and the pies and slices that fill a country bakery counter. A cafe upstairs turns the operation into a sit-down proposition, and catering extends its reach across the district. Each December, during Young's cherry season, the bakery stages a pie-eating competition that has become part of local festival lore. Seven decades in, with more than thirty staff and the founding family's descendants still at the bench, it reads less as a business than an institution, the kind of continuity that anchors a main street.
