Mount Arapiles rises abruptly out of the Wimmera plains near Natimuk, a single quartzite outcrop that has drawn climbers from across the world since the 1960s and is generally rated among the best traditional climbing venues on the continent. Arapiles Climbing Guides has run instruction and guided days on the mountain since 1992, making it one of the longest-running operations at the site, taking beginners through their first outdoor lead climbs, teaching anchor systems, and running abseiling and guided multi-pitch days for more experienced parties. All gear is supplied, and groups range from solo travellers to school and corporate outdoor education programs. The guiding here draws on decades of route knowledge specific to Arapiles' distinctive quartzite, which climbs differently to the granite and sandstone found elsewhere in Victoria. Natimuk itself is a small former wheat town that has grown around the climbing community over the decades, with the Grampians a short drive further east for parties wanting a second day on different rock.
