Part bakery, part general store, this is the pivot of daily life in Penshurst, a small volcanic-plains town beneath Mount Rouse. Bread is baked on site and the counter runs to pies, pasties, sausage rolls, focaccias and soups, with Rox coffee poured alongside. Shelves carry produce from nearby makers, including honey, eggs, jams and preserves, plus giftware, clothing and the odd local curiosity. It is the sort of independent country store that keeps a town of a few hundred fed and provisioned, and a reliable stop for anyone crossing the Western District between Hamilton and Warrnambool. Fresh loaves tend to be gone by lunchtime.
