Chateau Dore Winery & Receptions

Stone walls from 1866, acres of established gardens, and a Mandurang Valley setting ten minutes from Bendigo CBD. Hosts Nicole and Glenn Walker run weddings, private functions, and summer live music sessions here — a working winery that has quietly become Central Victoria's go-to garden reception venue.
The Vineyard Motel

Four rooms on Chardonnay Road, each stocked with local wines and beer. Owners M. Jackson runs the place with the energy of someone who genuinely means it — the sign at the front door reads *Enter as Strangers, Leave as Friends*. Consistently awarded since 2009. A useful base: Bathurst an hour away, Canberra two.
Oneday Estate Winery
45 Curlewis Road, Curlewis VIC 3222

The reception room was built by the owner from recycled timbers pulled out of Queenscliff Marina, old Catholic Church roof trusses and the Barwon Heads Bridge — all more than a century old. On Sundays, the vineyard opens for lunch: wood-fired pizza, paella cooked to order, and small-batch pinot noir, shiraz or riesling poured against views of 14 acres of vines.
Noisy Ritual

By day, the Brunswick East floor space is given over to winemaking — Victorian grapes, city pressing, the whole operation in plain sight. By night it pivots to wine bar and bottle shop. The founding story is suitably scrappy: two mates, a fermenter discovered in a suburban basement. Eight years of winemaking memberships followed. Loud, unpretentious, and genuinely set up to pull back the curtain.
M. Chapoutier Australia Winery & Cellar Door

Bringing over 200 years of Rhône Valley winemaking heritage to Victoria's Heathcote region, this Australian outpost of the renowned French Maison M. Chapoutier produces exceptional Shiraz wines displaying great elegance and mineral purity. The winery combines traditional French techniques with Australian terroir, guided by core values of respect, audacity, and generosity.
Captains Creek Organic Wines

Organic wines and ciders, farm-produce platters at the weekend cellar door, and a tiny house eco-stay on 35 acres of native bushland at 120 Kangaroo Hills Road. Blampied doesn't get much traffic, which is precisely the point.
Iron Pot Bay Vineyard

Small family vineyard on the Tamar's western arm, growing Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay in the sheltered pocket of Rowella. Quantities are small, the setting quiet. This is northern Tasmania at its least performative.
Piggs Peake Winery

On Hermitage Road, Steve Langham has run Piggs Peake since the 2003 vintage. His background as a chemical engineer quietly shapes the wines — bold, deliberate, sourced from vines dating to the 1800s. The cellar door crew are unusually knowledgeable and visibly enjoy themselves. Worth the detour.
Brandy Creek Estate

In the hills north of Warragul and Drouin, this West Gippsland estate combines a vineyard, restaurant and day spa. Cool-climate wines including Tempranillo and Sparkling Pinot Gris are poured in a glass-walled dining room and outdoor deck overlooking the vineyard, olive grove and Baw Baw ranges. The kitchen runs tapas, Paella feasts and Brazilian Churrasco nights, while the spa holds five treatment rooms and a Turkish Hammam.
Barossa Valley Estate Winery & Cellar Door

Paul Bangay's perennial gardens — Australia's largest — frame the cellar door at Marananga, where the focus is squarely on Barossa reds: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, GSM, Malbec. The standout is E&E Black Pepper Shiraz, which scored 90-plus points from Wine Spectator for ten consecutive years. Views across the valley; tastings that work through multiple vintages side by side.
Nintingbool Vineyard

Smythes Creek sits just west of Ballarat, and its name traces back to Captain John James Barlow Smythe's 1846 lease of the Nintingbool run. The family vineyard makes the most of the cool climate's long ripening season — Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Blanc de Noir and a Rosé are all available direct, with free shipping on cases of twelve or more.

Fiona runs the cellar door; Brendan tends the vines — and in 2022 he was named Co-Viticulturalist of the Year at the Mudgee Wine Show. Small-batch wines, a recently renovated tasting room, and tables outside under the trees at 791 Ulan Road. Open Friday to Sunday, ten minutes from Mudgee.
