At the southern edge of takayna/Tarkine, on the banks of the Pieman River deep in Tasmania's wild west, a former mining settlement has become a remote off-grid retreat. Accommodation ranges from the two-person Roadman's Cottage and queen or family eco retreats to the eight-bed Old Pub, all in a rustic miner's style. The Tannin restaurant and Ahrberg bar sit on site, and the cable-driven Fatman barge and heritage riverboat Arcadia II run from the landing. Rainforest walks, river cruises and kayaking fill the wilderness around.
