LAUNCESTON & TAMAR VALLEY, TAS

Longford hosted the Australian Grand Prix twice in the 1960s, on a street circuit that looped past this two-storey brick hotel on Wellington Street, and the pub still keeps the era close: photographs, race programs and a Triumph TR1 sit in the window among the racing memorabilia that fills the bar. Built around 1850, it now runs a workmanlike week of theme nights — wood-fired pizza and steak on Wednesdays, parmigiana with about ten variations, including vegetarian and gluten-free, on Thursdays — plus lunch service from Thursday to Sunday and a large dining room with an outdoor deck. Live music plays on the deck every second Sunday afternoon, free to get in. Fifteen minutes from Launceston, it draws on passing trade from the Midland Highway and locals settling in for a counter meal beneath the racing photos, a rare surviving link to Tasmania's brief era as a motorsport capital.
