Franklin RiverRafting

HOBART & SOUTHERN TASMANIA, TAS

Franklin River Rafting is family-owned and operated by the guides who lead the trips themselves, Elias and Franzi, with combined experience on the Franklin River of more than twenty years. The company runs two itineraries: an eight-day descent of the full 110-kilometre river, and a nine-day version that adds a side-hike to Frenchmans Cap. Groups are capped at twelve travellers, with private trips arranged for parties of eight or more. The business is based at Glaziers Bay in Tasmania's South-West, and operates inside the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area during the river's rainfall-dependent season, roughly October through April. Its guides describe the aim as being the best rather than the cheapest or the biggest, built around small groups. The company holds to a leave-no-trace standard on every trip, carrying out all rubbish generated on the river, including its own. Because the Franklin's technical rapids depend on rain-fed water levels rather than a dam-controlled release, itineraries are planned around current river conditions rather than a fixed schedule. The outfit has no other river on its books: the Franklin, and only the Franklin, is what Elias and Franzi guide.
