Melbourne's first fully plant-based pub occupies a corner of Lygon Street, doing the ordinary work of a public house, with pints, a fireplace and a room built for staying, but with a kitchen that never reaches for meat. The food is generous and pub-shaped rather than austere: share plates, roasts and the sort of comfort cooking that suits a long afternoon, all vegetarian and much of it vegan. It reads first as a good pub and second as a meat-free one, which is the trick few have managed. The Lygon Street setting, amid Carlton's old Italian restaurants and student haunts, gives it an easy neighbourhood pull. Open every day from early afternoon into the night.
