In the island's south-west near Flinders Chase, the Kelly Hill Caves are a dry limestone system formed within an old dune, their chambers pale and softly lit with pendulous formations and fine helictites. Guided tours explore the show cave, while the surrounding conservation park offers walking tracks down to a lagoon and the wild southern coast. The caves take their name, so the story goes, from a horse called Kelly that fell through a hidden shaft in the 1880s. Cool and quiet, they are a fine contrast to the beaches and bushland of the rest of Kangaroo Island.
