King Island Dairy
Cradle Country, TAS
King Island Dairy has been making cheese on King Island since 1891, through several owners and one near-closure — Canadian dairy giant Saputo announced it would shut the place in September 2024, and Tasmanian businessmen Nick Dobromilsky and Graeme Wilson bought it in March 2025 with state government support, keeping the brand in Australian hands. The factory sits at Loorana with the on-site cheese store, two of the operation's three milk-supplying farms minutes away. The cows graze on salt-kissed pasture year-round; milk reaches the vats within an hour of collection. The catalogue includes Stokes Point Smoked Cheddar, Roaring Forties Blue, and the Black Label brie and camembert range. Australia's most awarded cheese brand by industry tally.
