A white salt lake in the northern Goldfields, about 45 minutes' drive from the outback town of Menzies and an hour and three-quarters from Kalgoorlie. Across ten square kilometres of its crusted surface stand the 51 figures of Antony Gormley's Inside Australia — black chromium steel sculptures cast from Menzies residents, spaced roughly 500 metres apart — a spread that has earned the lake the tag of largest outdoor art gallery on Earth. Shadows run longest early and late in the day. Allow at least two hours; seeing every figure takes considerably longer.
