CRADLE COUNTRY, TAS

Eight kilometres down Dolcoath Road above Lake Cethana, Darryl Stafford's Ponderosa pine lodge took thirteen months to build through a Tasmanian highland winter and opened in October 1990. The main building is believed to be the largest hand-crafted log cabin in the Southern Hemisphere — a claim the scale of the place makes plausible. The Whispering Woods restaurant serves dinner on-site. Thirty-five minutes from Cradle Mountain.
