Maria IslandPenitentiary accommodation

EAST COAST TASMANIA, TAS

You sleep in the convict penitentiary at Darlington, a World Heritage site, in one of ten rooms of bunks warmed by a wood-heater. There is no electricity and the toilet block is a walk away; you bring your own bedding, food, torch and cooking gear, because nothing is sold on the island. The ferry from Triabunna takes forty-five minutes, and there are no cars — you go on foot or by bike.
