Patakijiyali Museum

DARWIN & TOP END, NT

The Tiwi Islands' own museum, at Wurrumiyanga on Bathurst Island. Sister Anne Gardiner — on the island since 1953 — set it up in the early 2000s to record Tiwi history, language and culture, and management passed to the Tiwi people in 2017. Its collection holds several threads of the islands' story at once: Tiwi spirituality, the Catholic Mission, the Tiwi role in the Second World War, and a deep Australian Rules football heritage. An interactive space helps Tiwi students learn their own culture, and the Frangipani Café next door opens Saturday mornings.
