A historic hotel at the port end of Charlotte Street, first built in 1874 during the Palmer River gold rush and now run as the Sovereign Resort. It keeps a public bar alongside a restaurant, cafe bar and bottleshop, with local seafood on the menu and a free-form pool set among tropical gardens. In far north Queensland, close to the wharf, museum and Cooktown's historic centre.
