Moonta sits at the centre of South Australia's 'Little Cornwall', settled by Cornish miners who came for the 1860s copper boom and brought the pasty with them. On Ellen Street, this bakery keeps to a traditional recipe: potato, onion, carrot, pumpkin, swede and turnip folded around meat, with the vegetables and meat sourced locally from Copper Coast Produce Wholesalers and YP Gourmet Meats. Pasties are the reason most people come, and travellers routinely rank them among the best they have eaten, but the counter also runs to pies, sausage rolls, vanilla slices and citrus tarts. The room has an unfussy old-world feel, with seating indoors and out. A straightforward stop that treats a regional staple with the seriousness it deserves.
