Paul McCaul started making things from spent calico flour bags as a science student in the 1970s, copied a leather jacket for a friend, and never really stopped. Five decades on, he runs The Real McCaul from a shop in Eumundi with his wife Oosaar on the sewing machine and daughter Melody making the belts — bags, wallets, jackets and dog collars cut and stitched out the back, mostly to order, in kangaroo from a Brisbane tannery and thick vegetable-tanned cowhide. Everything carries a ten-year workmanship warranty.
