A Brunswick Street fixture since 1988, this cavernous, brick-walled canteen has fed Fitzroy's vegetarians across generations, long before plant-based eating turned fashionable. The menu is sprawling and unbothered by borders, with laksa and mee goreng sharing space with pizza, gnocchi and Zen bowls, more than fifty dishes plus a rolling board of specials. Portions are generous, prices fair, the turnover brisk; every dessert is plant-based, and vegan swaps run through the whole list. There is nothing precious about the place, which is precisely its appeal: a democratic, all-day room where students, families and long-time regulars fold onto the same wooden benches. Few Melbourne kitchens have done more to normalise meat-free dining as an everyday proposition rather than a statement.
