ALICE SPRINGS & RED CENTRE, NORTHERN TERRITORY

Alice Springs & Red Centre, Northern TerritoryGet Directions

Molly Clark of Old Andado Station founded it in 1993, convinced that if Longreach could honour its stockmen, the outback’s women deserved a hall of their own. Since 2007 it has occupied the old Alice Springs Gaol, which held prisoners from 1938 to 1996 and was saved from demolition by locals. Exhibition halls hold the women’s history; the preserved men’s and women’s cell blocks hold the prison’s, inmates’ inscriptions and paintings still on the walls.
