John Stokes planted his King Valley vineyard in 1989 after winning three consecutive local wine show titles — starting from a literal grape-stomp. The cellar door, at the Milawa Cheese Complex, pours wines drawn from altitudes between 250m and 800m: Zinfandel and Tempranillo from gravelly clay at the home block, Pinot from the cool Whitlands plateau, Chardonnay from 35-year-old Whorouly South vines.
