In the hills near Echunga, south-east of Adelaide, these old diggings worked from 1868 remain one of South Australia's best-known spots to try for gold. Fossickers pan and dig the creek gravels of the historic Echunga goldfield with hand tools and no permit, following a marked heritage trail past relics of the rush, among them a chimney, a sluicing dam and old workings. The site closes on total fire ban days, and camping, fires and off-track vehicles aren't permitted.
