Between 1828 and 1856, more than half of the 25,000 women transported to Van Diemen's Land passed through this South Hobart complex. Now World Heritage-listed, the surviving yards and buildings hold that weight quietly. The guided tours earn their keep — individual stories of convict women and children born inside the factory walls cut through what could otherwise feel like an abstraction.
