On the New England Highway near Glen Innes, this strawberry farm and cafe has been a fixture of the highland run since Ivan and Rhonda March established it in the early 1970s, Ivan going so far as to design a locally built Berrylicious picking machine. Strawberries grow through the warmer months, roughly October to May, but the roadside cafe stays open year-round, seven days, turning out strawberries and cream, thick strawberry milkshakes and a shelf of jams, chutneys and relishes made on site alongside regional honey. It is unashamedly a stop-and-graze operation, the kind of generational farm gate that anchors a country town's sense of itself, and a dependable break for anyone crossing the tablelands.
