The region's weight sits in small-batch production — cellar doors and cideries spread across Tumbarumba, Batlow, Kunama, Mannus and Maragle, all leaning on the same high-altitude, cool-climate conditions that make grapes and apples behave differently here than lower down. Jindabyne and Crackenback add brewing and off-grid cabins tuned to the ski trade nearby. Cooma carries the region's institutional memory, holding three of the four heritage and science museums, while Tumut keeps a fourth. Walking country clusters around the high-country national park and Yarrangobilly, where alpine tracks and a limestone cave system sit apart from the valley towns. The spread suggests two economies: agricultural experimentation at altitude, and a national park drawing walkers past it.

That production sits alongside the national park's alpine walks and Yarrangobilly's caves and thermal pool, so the same limestone and snow gum country that shapes the walking trails also shapes what's fermenting in Tumbarumba and Batlow. Cooma, meanwhile, holds the institutional record of the region's hydro-electric scheme and gaol history rather than any outdoor drawcard.
