David and Melissa Britten planted their first vines on a north-facing slope above the Kent River in 1997, moving from Perth with a toddler and a Fine Art degree between them. Twenty-odd years on, the gravelly soils and low yields have earned a Halliday five-red-star rating. Come for the cellar door; leave with something from a block that its owners clearly refused to give up on.
